A collection of 54 poems - long and short, written in various styles. The majority are free verse.

I have three other published poetry books
'Kaleidoscope' - a collection of 119 poems, written from the age of 16 until 2010;
'Life's Rhythms' - a book of 316 haiku, composed in the traditional pattern of three lines with 5-7-5 syllables, written from 2011-12; and
'Mind-spinning Rainbows' - a collection of 150 poems, written since 2012.
Apart from poetry, I have written 12 novels - some for children and some for adults.

Sample poem...
We live in the echoes

We step inside mirrors
Lemon petals pave the way
I sleep in stages, sleep sublime
Walking pages never read again

I see the signs yet still forget
Imagining faces of the past
A rush of bliss splits the breeze
Where the peacemaker wanders
The crevices of the closed mind
He offers echoes of your stare

We live in the echoes
Patterns drawn upon a wall
Plunging ripples capture all
The raw beauty of the real

Where the Fool laughs his last
Is a time we’ll never see
For he plays so beautifully
Daring to step beyond himself
Embracing all there is to see
With such wide open arms.

Travelling light poetry eBook Vickie Johnstone

It’s April and that means it’s National Poetry Month and once again Serena from Savvy Verse & Wit is hosting a blog tour to celebrate poetry. Despite the fact that I don’t read a lot of poetry nor can I usually decipher the meaning behind most of it I do know what I like when I read it. If it makes me smile, cry, or just strikes a chord somewhere within me I know I’ve read a piece of poetry that means something to me and ultimately I think that’s what makes poetry enjoyable for anyone. Travelling Light by Vickie Johnstone is just such a book of poetry for me.

Originally I had chosen a different collection to highlight but then I ran across Travelling Light by Vickie Johnstone and downloaded it to my Kindle. From the very first piece I was captivated by the beauty of Vickie’s words and I read this collection not once, but twice! What I like best about this author’s work is that it is very straight forward. I didn’t have to search for a hidden meaning because I knew what she was trying to say and I really appreciated that as a novice poetry reader. Some of these poems are on the light side and some much darker – some I really liked and others were just ok but again that reflects back on how a piece reacts with the emotions of the reader. I found it to be a very enjoyable collection and intend to read more of Vickie’s work.

Finally, I thought I’d share one of the pieces that I enjoyed. I chose the poem November simply because it resonated with me. We’ve had such a bad winter this year and it’s still not over and I long for spring and this poem perfectly captured that.

November

November chills me with its breath
It shocks me out of this limbo
With its icy fingers and numb breaks
Darkness comes creeping in earlier

Crisp steps it makes across the land
As the sky sinks down ever nearer
Trees reach skyward for past blossoms
Carried away on the back of the wind

I yearn to bury myself away in warmth
To hibernate like a sleeping hedgehog
In a small box of paper, hidden away
Nestled alone with my memories

Wake me in the warm glow of spring
As I’m sure I will not miss a thing
This slow slide into winter unnerves me
Season of change, death and seclusion

Bring me sunshine on a silver platter
With roses tinted pink in summer scent
The smell of green brought by the rain
Smile away the despair of the darkest day

Travelling light poetry eBook Vickie Johnstone Reviews

Vickie Johnstone writes sensual, beautiful images, and this short collection includes many of her free-flowing explorations. "They are not about me, but filled with imaginary characters and places," she says. I appreciate the humble voice of the author, reflecting upon her work in her introductory note, "It isn't great poetry, but I try!" Clearly, her talent shows in every piece. When she dares reveal more of herself in her writing, her artistry will reach a peak.

Here are a few glimpses of her work. From the poem, We live in the echoes

Where the Fool laughs his last
Is a time we'll never see
For he plays so beautifully
Daring to step beyond himself
Embracing all there is to see
With such wide open arms

Vickie Johnstone writes many of these poems in the third person narrative, expressed in the midst of a magical, fairytale world. Here is an excerpt from Dreamers

She dreams the dreams she yearns to live
Ascending the high, jagged mountain reaches
Descending the bleakest, deepest chasms
She rides the unicorn, outpacing green forests

Even when she writes in a first person narrative, she remains the observer of her world, a visitor somewhat removed from events, contemplating upon what she sees

Painted canvases I visit
Now I'm not chained
To any one place
Travelling free as a bird
I measure my life in two suitcases

And here is an excerpt from a great poem, Lost and found

Give me back the thing you stole
Don't pretend that you've forgotten
When this was once the key to all
Nothing fades like trust broken

This is a fine collection by a promising young poetess, and I am looking forward to read more of her work.

Four stars.
A free download so thought I would check book out. Really like the poetry. A breath of fresh air to some of the poetry these days - ones that rehash love and broken hearts, and are 2 sentences long. This author writes poems on a variety of topics, with fun and vivid imagery. Lines are creative and poems are full- length. Snippet poetry is good at times, but I appreciated how this author fleshed out every poem. Instead of leaving us with a 2 line sentiment, like many of today's poets. The negative reviews are probably fans of rupi kaur. Not really into her poetry personally, but if you are looking for poetry with more substance download this book.
The poems in this book interweave beautifully from one poem to the next. First time reading a book by this author. There are many poems that liked Rain, We Live In The Echoes, Dreamers, Shine, Writer, Under A Blood Red Moon, Footsteps In The Rain, Gossamer, Seashells, Two, Diving, Twitch, His Darkest Place, Down, We are. I thought The Fox and The mole was a cute poem. It seems no matter if it was a male or female traveling that this person was seeing these objects while traveling wither it is by walking, hiking, taking a stroll in the park, that this person wrote what they saw. I can understand why readers could be confused by that. That's what I read.
